Modern Day Slavery, In Canada

Slavery was abolished in the United States in the1860s, and thought to be non existant in Canada in modern day. I was shocked however to read of a woman in Vancouver today. This 57 year old woman got in contact with a 21 year old woman in Africa and promised her a job in a salon if she were to move to BC. However, the woman stole her passport and other legal identification papers shortly after she arived and forced the young woman to come live and work for her. She ended up working at LEAST 18 hours a day, every day, managing the house-hold, cleaning, washing, cooking, gardening, she washed the cars of visitors. She was only given table scraps to eat, and was only allowed to rest when the rest of the house hold was already fast asleep.
For months and months this woman lived like this not knowing that it was unacceptable, but once she learned how wrong her treatment was she escaped to a local womens shelter for help. Her "employer" now faces several differnet charges.
